Rib Pain can range from pain at the mid back to pain at the front of the rib cage, sometimes also coming around from the back to the front. It is usually aggravated by deep breathing, coughing, sneezing or laughing and often presents as a sharp pain.

Why do ribs hurt?

Ribs are very strong bones in our body and normally don‘t break untless there is a severe impact on then or an underlying condition present which might predisposed bones to be more brittle. Very commonly, rib pain occurs after having been sick for a while due to coughing for instance which can strain the small muscles between the ribs. 

However, also issues with the lungs can cause rib pain. If you‘re experiencing sudden onset chest pain or difficulties breathing, especially worsened by exerhetion, please seek medical health!


Some common causes of Rib Pain

  • Muscle or ligament strain due to coughing for instance
  • Disc injuries in the thorax (rather rare)
  • Underlying pathologies such as inflammatory joint diseases
  • Trauma to the ribs or chest from falls, traffic collisions, and sports-related contact
  • Shingles
  • Underlying pathologies of organs such as the lungs
