Arthrosis & Arthritis
Arthrosis is characetrised by degenerative changes of a joint over time. It is the most widespread joint disease worldwide.
The terms arthrosis and arthritis are basically used interchangeably. The difference lies primarily in physiology: Arthrosis refers to the basic wear and tear of the cartilage. Arthritis refers to the inflammation that may develop as a result of the worn cartilage. 90% of people over the age of 65 have more or less advanced arthritis.
There are several misconceptions about arthritis such as that degenerative changes shown on x-ray mean that nothing can be done or that pain medications are the only way to relieve symptoms. Actually, joint wear and tear occus naturally after the age of 35 in some areas more than others, mainly depending on the load certain areas have been exposed to in the past.
However, joint degeneration is not necessarily equivalent to pain or impairment of quality of life!
