Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain along the sciatic nerve which runs from the pelvis along the back of the leg down to the foot. 

Symptoms include pain along the side or the back of the hip and leg, usually in a very sudden manner. It can be associated with numbness, tingling or weekness in the leg. It is caused by injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve.

 

Some common causes of Sciatica

  • Piriformis syndrome (a muscle in the pelvis compressing the sciatic nerve)
  • Discs injuries in the lower back
  • Muscle knots
  • Pelvic injury or fracture
  • Other underlying pathologies of the back or surrounding structures
